Manage Power Settings with Group Policy

Friday, September 28th, 2007

With Windows XP there isn’t a native way to manage power settings via a group policy setting. With Vista and Longhorn server this is now managable. Here is a link to the Energy Star website for a downloadable tool with an .adm file and a client application.

Start++ Customize You Vista Start Menu Search

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Start++ ScreenshotI was looking for a way to customize the Windows Vista Start Menu Search for the longest time and I finally found an app that lets me do what I wanted.  Initially, I wanted to be able to type things like “kb xxxxxx” in the search field and have it automatically go to the url for the Microsoft KB article that corresponds to the number I supplied (in this case http://support.microsoft.com/kb/xxxxxx).  Start++ lets you do just that and more.  Check it out!

How to Add Permissions for Client Users to Access Public Folder Content

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998834.aspx

This topic explains how to use the Exchange Management Shell to add permissions for users of client programs (such as Microsoft Outlook) to access and modify public folder content. When adding these permissions, you can either use predefined permission roles (which consist of specific access rights) or you can customize permissions by manually applying the available access rights. To specify the permissions for the client user, you can use the Add-PublicFolderClientPermission cmdlet or the AddUsersToPFRecursive.ps1 user management script.

Procedure:
To use the Exchange Management Shell to specify client access rights to a public folder by using the Add-PublicFolderClientPermission cmdlet

To add Publishing Editor permissions for the user Kim to access the public folder named West Coast, run the following command:
Add-PublicFolderClientPermission -Identity “\Marketing\West Coast” -AccessRights PublishingEditor -User Kim

For detailed syntax and parameter information, see Add-PublicFolderClientPermission.
To use the Exchange Management Shell to specify client access rights to a public folder by using the AddUsersToPFRecursive.ps1 management script:

To add Reviewer permissions for the user David to access the top-level public folder named Sales and all of the public folders contained within the Sales tree, run the following command:
AddUsersToPFRecursive.ps1 -TopPublicFolder “\Sales” -User “David” -Permission Reviewer

Microsoft CRM Prompts for Credentials After Changing Your Password

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

After changing his domain password, a user may not be able to access CRM (Outlook or Web Client) without first being prompted for his username and password.  This seems to occur if the user had to previousely enter a username and password to access CRM because he was not connected to the domain during login (i.e. a remote user connecting through a VPN) and that user selected the option to save the password to the password list.  From that point forward, it seems as if CRM will use that cached password for authentication instead of the actual domain credentials provided during logon.  When the user changes their password on the domain, it creates a discrepency between the password in the password list and the actual password needed to authenticate with CRM, resulting in the prompt for credentials.

To resolve this you can attempt to access CRM via the web client and when prompted for credentials, check the option to save to the password list.  This will effectively replace the previousely cached credentials with the new ones.

Unlock locked folder in OS X

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

An issue came up where there was a locked directory on the desktop of a Mac running OS X 10.4. I couldn’t delete it from the terminal either. Here is the way to change the attributes so you can delete (or move to trash) it successfully.

  1. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
  2. Type this, followed by a space: sudo chflags -R nouchg
  3. Drag the folder you would like to unlock into the Terminal window.
  4. Press Return.

Barcodes Don’t Print from Online Documents

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Dynamically generated documents printed online may not print correctly if the settings for your printer print graphics in “Vector” format instead of “Raster” format.  Examples of this include airline boarding passes and shipping labels printed online.  To check and correct this setting, go to the Advanced tab in the printing preferences for your printer.  Sorry I cant put up step-by-step instructions as they very for each printer.  The only printer I’ve confirmed this on so far is an HP 1160.
